The old school way - thread it through the ferrel in the cable end - unwind the wires forming the core of the cable - clean the hell out of the wires - cover them the soldering flux - work a drop of dammed hot solder onto the wire ends- trim by grinding or filingto fit the countersink in the ferrel - mount the cable - the pray at bit that it holds

I suspect you remember the drill as well as I do

The new way - takes a lot of pressure to crimp that stop end onto the cable - what about trying to crush it down in a vice?
